There are many reasons why a book gets written and published. Writers struggle to write meaningful books that will impact society, create positive change and make a difference in the world. For me, most of my books are written to make sense of the world around me. My new forthcoming book, When God Became White is no exception.
During this month of September, I have been working on the copyedits of my manuscript, When God Became White. I came across some quotes which I would like to share. Since this is the copyediting stage, these quotes may be subject to change due to further editing.
Whiteness is an unconscious state as it is often invisible to white people, who have no recognition for how it participates in oppressing communities of color.
Whiteness whitewashes an entire group of different people with different ethnicities, gathering them into a singular monolithic group as if their differences do not exist. This practice makes the “white group” appear pure while other groups are considered….
Whiteness is not just a category of people; rather it is a powerful concept that forms and impacts our thoughts, practices, and behaviors. Whiteness affects culture, politics, and religion and the various laws and doctrines that organize such entities.
The whiteness of Jesus became the architecture of white supremacy. A white Jesus was used to colonize countries around the world, engage in holy wars, and enforce enslavement and indentured servitude and genocide. Countless evils were committed in the name of a white Jesus and constructed and maintained by this white Jesus. The destructive power of whiteness is real. It is overpowering and makes people of color feel illegitimate and marginalized.
I hope that you will find my forthcoming book, When God Became White of interest. The Foreword is written by Dr. David Gushee and it will be released by InterVarsity Press in May 2024 during AAPI Heritage Month. You can read it together with my other book, Healing Our Broken Humanity (co-written with Graham Joseph Hill), Reimagining Spirit and Invisible. You can also read my related substack, “When God Became White.”
I can’t wait for this book to be out in the world.

In some tiny way would it be helpful, as a "white" person to speak of myself according to my lineage? While there are many small bits that make me me, I would consider myself Anglo-Irish.
