Feminist Theologies: The Basics
I am delighted to share that Dr. Susan Shaw and I signed a contract to co-write another book, Feminist Theologies: The Basics. This will be our third co-written book and this book is for Routledge’s The Basics book series. I’m so excited to write with Susan again.
About the Series
The Basics is a highly successful series of accessible guidebooks which provide an overview of the fundamental principles of a subject area in a jargon-free and undaunting format.
Intended for students approaching a subject for the first time, the books both introduce the essentials of a subject and provide an ideal springboard for further study. With over 50 titles spanning subjects from Artificial Intelligence to Women’s Studies, The Basics are an ideal starting point for students seeking to understand a subject area. Each text comes with recommendations for further study and gradually introduces the complexities and nuances within a subject.
Dr. Susan Shaw is a professor at Oregon State University where she teaches courses on sexuality and gender studies. She is an amazing writer and writes for the Baptist News Global.
We have already co-written Intersectional Theology (Fortress Press) which is being used by many seminaries in theology and gender studies classes. Intersectional Theology offers a pathway for reflective Christians, pastors, and theologians to apply the concepts and questions of intersectionality to theology. Intersectionality is a tool for analysis, developed primarily by black feminists, to examine the causes and consequences of converging social identities (gender, race, class, sexual identity, age, ability, nation, religion) within interlocking systems of power and privilege (sexism, racism, classism, heterosexism, ableism, ageism, nativism) and to foster engaged, activist work toward social justice. Applied to theology, intersectionality demands attention to the Christian thinker's own identities and location within systems of power and the value of deep consideration of complementary, competing, and even conflicting points of view that arise from the experiences and understandings of diverse people.
Our second co-written book, Surviving God will be published March 2024. It is a book on surviving sexual violence and assault and how our understanding of God really affects how we overcome abuse. In Surviving God, we show how traditional ways of thinking about God are problematic as it contributes to the problems of sexual abuse and fail to promote healing for survivors of abuse. We draw from our own personal experiences and the experiences of other survivors, and center how gender intersects with race, sexuality, class, and religion. We work towards healing and transforming churches and faith communities and hope to challenge readers to new ways of thinking about God that are surprising, challenging, and empowering. Please do pre-order Surviving God today.
I am so grateful for Susan’s friendship, scholarship and writing partnership!
