Being a professor, author, speaker and podcaster keeps me busy. But what keeps me going is being a mother of three young adults. Some mornings I wake up and cannot believe that I actually gave birth to three children. Two were born during my Ph.D. program and the third child was like a “gift” for actually finishing my Ph.D. program.
The three are all successful young adults and they make me a proud mom. One proud moment came a few weeks ago when I watched my daughter perform at the LOKO Showcase at Cornell University.
My daughter is a senior at Cornell University majoring in Human Ecology. She is a dancer and has danced since she was three years old. She did ballet and jazz all through Elementary, Middle and High School at the Ballet Guild of the Lehigh Valley. She performed in the Nutcracker and numerous other shows for more than 10 years.
Once she started studying at Cornell, there was no ballet dance group, so she joined two other dance groups, Impact Dance Troupe and LOKO Dance.
Studying is hard enough, but joining two highly competitive dance groups and performing is another level of commitment. Due to Covid and my travel commitments, I have missed all her performances except for this year’s Spring LOKO Showcase. Since she is a senior, I was desperate to watch at least one of her shows and I was thrilled to finally watch her perform.
The LOKO Showcase was phenomenal. These young dancers rehearsed, choreographed, and danced their heart out. I was mesmerized by all the various moves and creative dances that these students put together. The entire show with guest artists, alumni dancers who twirled, flipped and glided on the stage, was mind-blowing.
Dancing is something I always wanted to do, but I have never had the opportunity to do so. To watch my daughter dance brings me so much joy as I get to see my daughter live out my own secret dream to be a dancer.
It is a proud moment for me as a mom to see my all children thrive and use their gifts and talents to bring beauty into the world. I hope that young people continue to pursue their dreams and do good in the world to make the world a better place for all.
This Sunday, April 16th will be her last IMPACT performance at Cornell as she graduates in May 2023. Can’t wait to watch her perform this last show before graduation.
