Luther College: Theology of Visibility
I am honored to be invited to give the Sihler Endowed Lecture at Luther College on March 5th at 7p.m. I will be lecturing from my book, Invisible and focusing on “Theology of Visibility”.
This lecture is presented in celebration of Women’s History Month with thanks to the Sihler Family Endowed Lecture fund.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, I am glad that Asian American women’s stories, voices and histories are celebrated and remembered at Luther College. I wrote my book, Invisible, as Asian Americans, especially Asian American women, are made invisible in our society, history and culture. Our rich stories, contributions, culture and influence in all areas of life (science, music, art, medicine, sports, religion etc.,) are often ignored, and not taught in our public school education or included in our history books. We need to recognize this problem and be intentional in rectifying it.
Therefore, it is wonderful when colleges, like Luther College, are intentional about including Asian American women’s voices during Women’s History Month.
“The identity studies department wants Women’s History Month at Luther to be intentional in showing how it intersects with Black History Month and Asian and Pacific Islander History Month through our events,” said Char Kunkel, head of the identity studies department at Luther. “We want to honor women’s history, but show how it intersects with other identities.
The intentionality of Luther College raising Asian American women’s voices needs to happen in other colleges and universities across the country. Asian American women have contributed richly to literature, science, medicine, music, arts and theology. I hope that during Women’s History Month, we can lift up marginalized, oppressed and silenced women’s voices which often offer deep and rich insights into all areas of society.
I am deeply moved to be invited by Luther College to speak about Theology of Visibility. This theology uplifts the voiceless and empowers the invisible, moving beyond experiences of oppression and works toward claiming their space in the kin-dom of God. I am happy that Luther College’s Book Club has been reading my book, Invisible leading up to my talk.
I will also be preaching in Luther College’s weekly chapel on Wednesday, March 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. I will speak at the chapel service honoring International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8. If you are nearby Luther College, please do come to my Sihler Lecture, book signing and preaching.
