Preached at Green Tree Church, Korea
It has been a joy to take Earlham School of Religion students to Korea for a “Contextual Theology” class. We are visiting historic sites, palaces, churches and temples to understand how theology is contextual and how empire and colonialism has impacted Korean culture, religion and spirituality.
Last Sunday, it was a big joy to preach at Green Tree Church where Rev. Kwak Sookwang is the senior pastor. Rev. Kwak and I were both students at Knox College and it has been over 28 years since we last saw each other when his wife, Song Jong Mi, a gospel singer, sang at our wedding. Last Sunday was a wonderful reunion to see him, his wife and meet their beautiful daughter.
In Korea, church can be an all day event. Many church members gather for breakfast at various coffee shops to catch up with each other while some meet for Bible Study before church service. After church, many go out to eat in various restaurants.
Last Sunday, we ate at a restaurant where a large group of church members had already gathered for lunch. A Korean actress, Kim Soo Mi was present and it was a big thrill to meet her in person as I have watched several shows that she appeared in. After lunch, many will continue their fellowship by getting coffee, ice cream and dessert. Some members hold ‘cell group’ meetings after lunch. This gathering may continue until dinner time where they will then enjoy a meal together.
