Publisher's Weekly: Surviving God
Writing a book seems like a never-ending process.
First, there is the long writing process which may take years or even decades for some. This is then followed by editing and rewriting and then some more editing. After you feel that the manuscript is ‘good enough’ you need to find a publisher who then makes you rewrite, edit and rewrite some more. Once the publisher is satisfied, it goes to copyediting, followed by going over the typeset pages. The end stage of publishing is reviewing the Final Pages which is your last chance to find any errors in your manuscript.
This long, difficult writing process pays off once you get the published hardcopy book in your hands. When you get your long-awaited book which took years or decades, it feels like a heavy weight has been lifted off your shoulders and excitement fills your body. The published book in your hands makes the arduous labor of writing all worth the journey.
Dr. Susan Shaw and I have just finished reviewing the Final Pages of our manuscript, Surviving God. It has been a long but meaningful road to be co-writing with Dr. Susan Shaw. Our first co-written book, Intersectional Theology has been received well and is being read widely and used in many seminary classrooms for various classes.
Co-writing our second book has been a wonderful experience. I have learned so much from Susan as she continues to challenge me to be a better and a critical writer. Her theological thinking pushes me to think beyond my own limited comfortable theological boundaries. For this, I am so grateful to be writing books with a talented and gifted writer like Susan.
Publisher’s Weekly
Publisher’s Weekly included our book in their post, “New Books Address Surviving Toxic Religion”.
They wrote, “Surviving God: A New Vision of God through the Eyes of Sexual Abuse (Broadleaf, Mar., 2024) is by two theologians, both survivors of sexual abuse, who were able to stay within the church by rethinking traditional ways of viewing God. Grace Ji-Sun Kim is a professor of theology at Earlham School of Religion and an ordained PC(USA) minister, and Susan M. Shaw is a professor of women, gender, and sexuality studies at Oregon State University who was ordained as a Baptist minister, but now belongs to the United Church of Christ. According to the publisher, the book will challenge beliefs that contribute to oppression (and that are) "not reflective of the God of love and justice at the heart of the Gospel" and imagine new, hopeful, and healing beliefs.
Acquisitions editor Lisa Kloskin describes the authors as "two powerhouse women academics who have been writing and researching on feminist issues for decades—doing groundbreaking theological work. But they haven’t spoken publicly about their own abuse, until this book. Surviving God is full of firsthand accounts from survivors who simply refuse to keep silent any longer. It's their voices that make this book important for the current moment."
