I was honored to be invited by Dr. Tripp Fuller to speak at Homebrewed Christianity’s Theology Beer Camp. This was my second year and the event was just as fun, interesting, exciting and enriching as last year’s Theology Beer Camp.
It was really good to reconnect with my theological friends and conversation partners at Theology Beer Camp. Dr. Kate Hanch and I were both invited to give a talk on “Christianity after Patriarchy”. I gave my talk on “Dismantling Patriarchy” which tackled the question of who God is. Our views and understandings of God really impacts how we live, treat others and build faith communities.
We use metaphors and analogies to talk about God as they are necessary to give our minds some way to try to imagine the incomprehensible. However, the church has continued to use masculine metaphors such as King, Lord, Man, Sovereign, and Father. This masculine images of God have perpetuated men’s domination over women in most societies, churches and communities around the globe. Metaphors such as King validates and reinforces colonialism which has been used as a tool to oppress the colonized.
If masculine metaphors about God have been used to uphold patriarchy, we need to explore different metaphors to talk about God that will work towards dismantling patriarchy, racism, climate injustice, economic injustice etc., as these injustices are intersectional. My new forthcoming books Surviving God (co-written with Susan Shaw) and When God Became White (May 7, 2024, IVP) explores this further and you can pre-order it now.
