Why Read "When God Became White"?

This past weekend, I was honored to be invited by Rev. JC Pritchett, President of Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Florida to speak on my book When God Became White. The event was held at the beautiful Woodson Museum and it was a well-attended event followed by a lively Q&A and book signing.

Christians are heavily influenced by the Bible and by how we view God. If our image of God is a white male God, it will uphold whiteness, white privilege, and white supremacy which perpetuate racism. Therefore, we must rethink and reimagine who God is so that we can work towards a more just world.

It isn’t just Christians who are influenced by a white male God, but so is our society. North America is becoming less and less Christian, but Christianity still has an impact on our worldview, politics, laws, and our daily decision-making process. Even though fewer people attend church, we can still witness how a white male God influences culture, art, literature, and lawmaking.

As we continue to see the power of Christianity in an ever-increasing secular world, we want to ensure that an image of a white male God will be removed from our narrative if we are to dismantle racism, patriarchy, homophobia, and climate injustice. Metaphors and images about God are just that-metaphors and images and are not God. Therefore we need to seek new ways of reimagining God which is empowering and liberating.

This is why I wrote When God Became White to help me understand why racial injustice continues to exist in our society and how we can begin to dismantle it. Racial injustice intersects with gender injustice, climate injustice, economic injustice, and other injustices to continue to oppress people of color and other marginalized groups.

My book, When God Became White proposes non-gendered and non-racialized ways of reimagining God as a helpful alternative to the white male God image. God as Spirit, mystery, and wisdom are meaningful ways to understand God that works towards justice, love, and embrace. Begin the journey with me of reimagining God by reading When God Became White.
