Our family immigrated to London, Ontario in January 1975. It was a very cold and snowy winter. London lies right in the middle of the snow belt, and as a kid, I remember walking to school with snow up to my waist. I started kindergarten in the middle of the school year and I still recall how uncomfortable I felt in kindergarten class even though kindergarten is supposed to be “fun” learning. I remember being made fun of because I looked different and couldn’t speak English. As an immigrant child, I encountered racism. I have written about my experiences in some of my books, most recently
